History of PictureGo!

The development of PictureGo! started in 1999. After I had bought my first digital camera, I wrote a program to watch my pictures in a slide show. Being an enthusiastic programmer, I continued to develop the program and version 8.2 is the thirtyninth release, so far....

Version 7.6 - December 2017

It has been a long time since I have written release notes. In between no less than 6 versions have been released.

Obviously, the interest in PictureGo! has decreased with all what is happening in the cloud nowadays.

Fewer and fewer people are storing their pictures on a Windows computer as a primary source. Lots of people just don't bother and automatically have their images uploaded to some cloud service from a mobile device.

Not me.. So PictureGo! is still under development. The release notes cover the versions 7.1 through 7.6 so let's talk about the highlights:

In version 7.2 searching for pictures based on camera model was intoduced. This had been on my mind for a long time. Since pictures of my wife and I end up in the same folder, this was quite a nice feature. Easier yet since you are able to store the search option as a filter. You simply apply the desired filter without having to execute the search option over and over.

In version 7.3 you can have all Exif information displayed along with the image. Easy when you want to compare the result of images based upon the settings you used.

In version 7.4 a brand new feature: the collage designer. I had been thinking about this for years realizing that it was a whole lot a work. That turned out to be true; it took me about half a year to complete it. Proud of the result though. You can design a custom collage with any number of pictures you like. Add text, customize borders and edges, add a background image or just pick a background color. It is all possible and even more. This feature would have called for a new main version (8.0) but I don't want to hit version 10 any time soon. That would call for other changes (also with the web site) that I do not want to anticipate on right now.

In version 7.5 something completely different: the ability to send images directly through Gmail. This works pretty neat in combination with the long lasting option to decrease pictures sizes on the fly.

And than version 7.6 that I just completed: no shocking new things but nice features nevertheless : share custom albums through Flickr provided you use PictureGo ! as your Flickr backup tool. Further on, just for looks, you can change the look of PictureGo ! choosing a theme. And, in case you use PictureGo ! as an audioplayer you might be interested in the next feature : after closing a playlist and subsequently opening the same playlist again, the playlist will resume exactly from the point where you closed it.

So, I think PictureGo ! has improved quite a bit. At last a concern (apart from the fact that the cloud is taking over) : virus scanners. I myself have changed from Norman to Kaspersky. The latter gives me quite a headache. It gives a whole lot a false positives on my own programs with all kinds of quite alarming notificatons. Since I know myself that I am not in the business of writing malicious code this is quite concerning. I can well imagine people, after getting alarming messages, removing PictureGo! immediately. Little I can do about it.

Almost Christmas! Have a wonderful Christmas and a happy 2018!
